Known as the right-hand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah was the chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2014 to 2020. He has also served as chairman of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) since 2014.
Popularly referred to as modern-day 'Chanakya' of Indian politics for his organisational and management skills, Shah holds vast experience in the political arena.
The senior BJP leader, now dubbed as an astute strategist, started his political career as a leader of the student wing of the RSS, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, in 1983. He joined the BJP in 1987, one year before Narendra Modi joined the party.
The BJP leader had held multiple key portfolios in the Gujarat government, including the home ministry, when Narendra Modi was the chief minister. At one time, he was given the charge of 12 departments: Home, Law and Justice, Prison, Border Security, Civil Defence, Excise, Transport, Prohibition, Home Guards, Gram Rakshak Dal, Police Housing and Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs.
Shah’s influence rose in the BJP after Narendra Modi was picked as party’s prime ministerial candidate in 2014.
He gained recognition as a national political figure after the BJP, under his leadership, registered an emphatic win in the country’s politically most crucial state, Uttar Pradesh, during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections
As a result, Shah was appointed as the party's national president in July 2014. Since then, he has been credited with spearheading BJP to emphatic victory in several elections as the party's president.
Shah successfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Gandhinagar from Gujarat. This was the first time Shah contested the parliamentary elections.Earlier, he had served as a member of the upper house of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, from Gujarat in 2017.
Following the Narendra Modi-led NDA came to power at the Centre for the second consecutive term in 2019, Shah was given the charge of Home Ministry, one of the key portfolios. Took oath at the age of 54, Shah is the youngest serving full-time Home Minister.
