Strathclyde University Introduces MSc Program in Computational Mathematics

The MSc program is divided into three semesters. In the first semester, students will build a strong foundation in computational techniques through core modules. These modules include topics like finite element methods and machine learning mathematics. The second semester focuses on advanced topics, including numerical methods and deep learning for partial differential equations. During both semesters, students can choose optional modules based on their interests in areas such as optimization, big data, and financial mathematics. The final semester is dedicated to a research project where students will apply their skills to solve real-world problems, often in collaboration with industry or academic partners.

Dr. Alexander Wray, the Program Director, emphasized the importance of computational mathematics in science and technology. He said that this MSc will give students a solid foundation in the mathematics and numerical methods required to make meaningful contributions to fields such as machine learning and physical system simulations. The program also offers strong industry connections and practical relevance.

A webinar will be held on May 15, 2025, at 13:00 BST for prospective students to learn more about the program. Students will have the chance to ask questions during a Q&A session with department staff and the admissions team.

To apply, students must have at least a second-class Honours degree (2:2) or its equivalent in mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Relevant professional experience is also encouraged. Additionally, students must meet the English language requirement of an IELTS score of 6.0, with no component below 5.5.

The course will start in September 2025, with an international student fee of £25,500. The University is offering 850 Glasgow International Masters Scholarships, each worth £5,000, to support global talent.
