Pope Leo XIV
The newly elected Pope Leo XIV, is not expected to receive a traditional salary as head of the Roman Catholic Church. Like his predecessor, the Vatican will cover his living expenses, including housing, food, and transportation, through allowances and stipends, according to Fox News.
The Vatican, also sometimes called “the world’s smallest country,” runs its economy through donations, investments, and revenues from various sources, according to Investopedia. A major contributor is Peter’s Pence (Obolo di San Pietro), a collection of donations which comes from Catholics around the world, bringing in around $27 million annually, as reported by American Magazine.
Robert Prevost’s exact net worth is not known. But according to Merca20, he earned between €4,000 and €5,000 a month as a cardinal. Now, as Pope Leo XIV, all his expenses will be paid by the Vatican.
As of now, the Vatican continues to struggle financially, reporting a deficit of over $90 million in 2023, as per reports cited by Fox News. Pope Francis had earlier warned of serious problems with the Vatican’s pension fund, according to Vatican News.
Still, the Holy See, Vatican's governing body, maintains funding for the papacy through its established financial sources. While it does not reveal actual figures, the CIA World Factbook had estimated that in 2013, it earned $315 million and spent $348 million, reported Fox News.
This is a developing story.
