The Cardinals gathered in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel have elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope. Robert Prevost is the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church and will take the name Pope Leo XIV.
The crowd in St. Peter's Square erupted in cheers as the crowd shouted "Viva il papa" (Long Live the Pope) after the white smoke wafted into the late afternoon sky at 6:07 pm. Pope Leo XIV was then revealed as the new pontiff, and in his first words, said, "Peace be with you."
The pontiff then spoke fondly of his predecessor Francis, saying, "We still hear in our ears the weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis who blessed us."
