What is INS Vikrant? A War Zone That Sails - Here's How It Could Be Lethal For Pakistan
INS Vikrant: Amid rising tensions with Pakistan following aerial attacks on Indian cities, the Indian Navy deployed the formidable INS Vikrant to the Arabian Sea. India-Pakistan News: As tensions with Pakistan escalated on Thursday night following repeated aerial attacks on multiple Indian cities, the Indian Navy responded by deploying its most powerful and prestigious warship, INS Vikrant, in the Arabian Sea. Positioned for swift action, the carrier stands ready to deliver a decisive blow if provocation continues.
This floating fortress, often described as a mobile airbase, is not just a ship, it’s an entire city at sea, and in times of conflict, a fearsome war zone capable of bringing immense destruction to adversaries.
Commissioned into service in 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, INS Vikrant marks a new era in India’s maritime dominance. Designed and built indigenously, it is the pride of the Indian Navy and a symbol of self-reliant defence.
With a length of 262 metres and width of 62 metres, the massive aircraft carrier boasts 14 decks, making it as tall as a 14-storey building. Inside, it houses everything from a hospital and swimming pool to a modern kitchen, allowing it to function as a self-sustained war base for up to 45 days at sea without returning to port.
The warship is equipped with four gas turbines producing 88 MW of power, and its runway stretches the length of two football fields, capable of launching up to 40 fighter jets in rapid succession. This makes it not just a command centre, but also a devastating airborne strike platform.
INS Vikrant: Armed to the Teeth
In terms of firepower, INS Vikrant is armed with a suite of advanced weaponry:
- 32 Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles
- 16 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles
- 1 Oto Melara Naval Gun
- 4 AK-630 Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS)
- 4 torpedo launchers
Accompanied by Sea King or Dhruv helicopters.
This combination ensures both offensive reach and impenetrable defence, making it an unmatched force in the Indian Ocean.

Pakistan’s Naval Challenge Falls Short
In stark contrast, Pakistan's naval strength pales when stacked against INS Vikrant. With only two ageing submarines and no comparable aircraft carrier, its capability at sea is significantly outmatched. Should the conflict escalate, Vikrant’s overwhelming power and mobility could prove decisive, potentially tipping the balance in India’s favour on the high seas.
This comes after the heightened tensions triggered by the 22 April terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 innocent civilians, mostly tourists, were killed. India responded with Operation Sindoor, launching precision strikes on nine terrorist launchpads across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
In retaliation, Pakistan attempted to strike Indian military sites using drones and missiles on Thursday evening, targeting locations in Jammu, Punjab and Rajasthan. However, the Indian Armed Forces, backed by sophisticated air defence systems, successfully intercepted all threats.
