Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) continued their inconsistent run in the IPL 2025 when they were defeated by the last-placed Chennai Super Kings at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday, May 7, by a margin of two wickets. This was KKR's 6th defeat of the campaign in 12 games. While things may look difficult now, the defending champions still have a chance to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs despite their crushing defeat on Wednesday.
How KKR Can Still Qualify For IPL 2025 Playoffs
KKR now have 11 points from 12 games, and have two games remaining in this tournament against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which are both away from home. Hence, the maximum points tally that KKR can achieve is 15.
Gujarat Titans (GT) and RCB are already on 16 points, and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are on 15 with three games in hand. If GT and PBKS win all their remaining games, while RCB win two out of their final three games and loses against KKR, then the three teams will be the top three sides to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs.
KKR would then hope that MI lose their remaining two games. If all these scenarios come true, then KKR and Delhi Capitals (DC) will be tied on 15 points. KKR will then have to ensure that they finish at a greater Net Run Rate than DC.
On the other hand, if GT win their remaining games, RCB win their matches apart from the one against KKR, and PBKS lose all their matches, DC lose two of their remaining matches against GT and MI, and LSG lose one of their three remaining matches, then KKR, PBKS, and DC will finish on 15 points. Then the team with the greater net run rate will qualify for the fourth spot.
