Uttarakhand Police are investigating after a video online showed a group of people dancing to party music outside Kedarnath Temple.
The incident occurred on the eve of the Char Dham Yatra tourist season, authorities said, causing outrage on social media.
The activity was recorded and posted to Twitter (now called X) on May 5.
At least a couple mounted speakers can be seen playing music on a cobbled area which, illuminated by disco lights, became the dance floor for a virtually all-male crowd at blue hour.
The footage caused disbelief at the apparent disregard for the holy site, which houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
Commenting on Times Now’s Instagram post, a user said: “It has become a trend to dance like lunatics in every situation. No sense of culture or respect. [We] drink and dance when someone dies [or] gives birth or gets married... Idk (I don’t know) what the authorities wer [sic] doing there.”
Another, calling for action, wrote, “They [the dancers] should be identified and proceeded against in a court of law. The event management company that organised the lights, DJ etc should be shut down too.”
“How was this allowed to happen?” asked a third.
Following the public outcry, the Rudraprayag police registered a First Information Report (FIR) alleging defilement of a place of worship and creating a disturbance. A probe is underway to identify the people involved using social media platforms.
Priests and temple authorities, including the Uttarakhand Char Dham Teerth Purohit Mahapanchayat, released a statement calling out the act as disrespectful and against religious beliefs and traditions.
The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) also acknowledged the incident and stressed the need to maintain the sanctity of holy places.
A ban on all photography and videography at the sites is already in place since 2023.
