Maharana Pratap Jayanti is a day to remember and honour the birth of one of India’s most respected warriors, Maharana Pratap. Maharana Pratap Jayanti is celebrated on 9th May. According to the Julian calendar, he was born on 9th May 1540 but according to the Gregorian calendar which replaced the Julian calendar, it is on 19th May. However, if we follow the Hindu calendar then his birthday will be observed on 29th May. This day is observed every year with great respect, especially in Rajasthan.

History of Maharana Pratap

Maharana Pratap was a brave Rajput king of Mewar, a region in Rajasthan. He was born on 9 May 1540 in Kumbhalgarh, Rajasthan. He belonged to the Sisodia dynasty and was the eldest son of Maharana Udai Singh II and Maharani Jaiwanta Bai. He became the ruler of Mewar in 1572 after his father’s death. He is remembered for his courage and resistance against the Mughal emperor Akbar. Unlike many other kings of the time, he refused to bow down to the Mughal Empire.
One of the most important events in Maharana Pratap's life was the Battle of Haldighati, which took place in 1576. This battle was fought between the army of Maharana Pratap and the Mughal forces led by Man Singh I, a general of Akbar. Though the battle did not have a clear winner, Maharana Pratap's resistance became a symbol of Rajput bravery.
Even after the battle, Maharana Pratap did not give up. He continued to fight for his land and people, living in forests and mountains, leading a tough life but never surrendering. His horse, Chetak, also became famous for his loyalty and bravery during the war.

Significance of the Day

Maharana Pratap Jayanti is not just about remembering a famous king; it is about remembering values like courage, honour, and dedication to one’s country. His life inspires people to stand up for what is right, even in difficult times. On this day, people across India, especially in Rajasthan, pay tribute to him through cultural events, speeches, and processions.
