It wasn’t Matt’s first time in Delhi; on a previous visit during Ramadan, he visited Jama Masjid and savoured kebabs, iconic nalli nihari and bheja fry. Clearly impressed, Matt Preston remarked, “I am excited, Nihari, fantastic. Lucknow did not invent this technique, but it was great. It was a Delhi idea." His words offered more than just praise, it was nothing less than an appreciation for the country’s culinary legacy. According to Sufiyan who was leading the tour, Diamond Bakery was one of his favourite stops. He even purchased rusk and biscuits to take home with him noting that even though he's eaten biscuits all over the world, the bakeries of Old Delhi were a unique and underrated gem.
As the food trail sweetened, Matt turned his attention to Indian desserts. Sampling rasgulla and gulab jamun, he shared with a giggle, “The more I eat of Rasgulla and Gulab Jamun, the more I discover what I like and what I don't like." It was a refreshingly honest moment from someone still navigating the richness of Indian sweets.
Matt Preston’s love for Indian food runs deep, and his visits continue to spotlight the richness and diversity of its regional cuisines for his global fans. For him and many food lovers, Old Delhi isn’t just a place on the map but a celebrated feast of history, flavour and tradition.
