Mumbai Mock Drill: Mumbai, along with several cities across India, is set to participate in a nationwide civil defence mock drill today (May 7) at 4 PM. The drill, a part of a large-scale emergency preparedness initiative, is being conducted to train citizens and authorities in responding effectively to a hostile attack scenario. Believed to be the first such coordinated effort since 1971, the exercise aims to test evacuation protocols, blackout responses, and bunker readiness.
Here’s everything you need to know if you’re in Mumbai or the wider Maharashtra region.

Mock Drill Locations in Maharashtra

The civil defence mock drill will be held at 16 sites across 10 districts in Maharashtra, including:
Cities: Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Raigad, Jalgaon, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Palghar
  • Key Towns: Uran, Tarapur, Roha-Nagothane, Manmad, Sinnar, Thal, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Bhusawal

    Exams to Continue as Scheduled

What to Expect at 4 PM
At exactly 4 PM, sirens will sound in participating areas. This signals the beginning of the drill. Here’s what citizens are advised to do:

    Blackout Protocol

Turn off all lights at home, in offices and public spaces.
  • If using emergency lighting, make sure windows are covered using thick curtains or cardboard to block visibility from outside.
  • Minimise Light from Devices

Avoid using mobile phones, laptops or any light-emitting device near windows.
  • Keep screens dim or out of sight if absolutely necessary.
  • Move to a Safe Spot

When the long siren sounds, head to the safest area in your home—preferably a room without windows or with secure cover.
  • Families are encouraged to conduct the drill together to familiarise everyone, including children and the elderly, with safety procedures.
  • Follow Official Updates

Tune in to a radio or television for real-time updates from the authorities.
  • Avoid forwarding rumours or unverified information on social media.
  • Switch Off Appliances

Turn off gas and electrical appliances as soon as the siren is heard to prevent any accidental fires or short circuits.

    Safety Kit Checklist

Keep torches, glow sticks, radios, bottled water, dry food, and essential medicines within easy reach.
  • Ensure pets are indoors and children are kept calm.
  • Siren Sounds: What They Mean
Long Siren: Start of drill / hostile situation
  • Short Siren: End of drill / situation safe
  • Citizens caught outdoors at 4 PM should quickly move indoors or to the nearest safe shelter.
