Pope Leo XIV’s social media posts involving past criticism of Vice President JD Vance have resurfaced after his election, drawing fresh backlash from MAGA influencers. Laura Loomer, a right-wing activist, called the newly elected pope, Robert Provest, “anti-MAGA” and “woke” in a post on X following his Vatican appointment.
The post is from just weeks ago where, Pope Leo XIV, then Cardinal Robert Prevost, called JD Vance “wrong” over his comments on Christianity in a Fox News interview. “Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others,” he posted, sharing a National Catholic Reporter article on the subject.
This tweet is among several others which are now under scrutiny, providing insight into the first American pope’s political views. While CBS reports that Pope Leo XIV is a centrist, these posts have angered the MAGA influencers.
Pope Leo XIV had earlier opposed Donald Trump’s immigration policies, sharing a 2015 Washington Post article, where he quotes Cardinal Dolan criticizing Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric, calling it "problematic."
As per The Independent, the newly elected pope once tweeted, “There is nothing remotely Christian, American, or morally defensible about a policy that takes children away from their parents and warehouses them in cages. This is being carried out in our name and the shame is on us all.”
In one of his tweets, Pope Leo XIV also shared an article from America: The Jesuit Review, which was about a letter from Pope Francis on immigration, writing the caption, “Pope Francis’ letter, JD Vance’s ‘ordo amoris’ and what the Gospel asks of all of us on immigration.”
Pope Leo XIV is the first American to lead the Catholic Church and is viewed as a centrist, according to CBS. He speaks for the migrants and the poor while also maintaining traditional stances on issues like ordination of women as deacons.
