Rabindranath Tagore, known for changing Bengali literature, was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his book of poems, Gitanjali (Song Offerings). He wrote many famous poems, songs, and books, including India's national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. Tagore, called the Bard of Bengal, started writing poetry when he was just eight years old. He was an important figure in the Bengal Renaissance and created a large body of work, including paintings, texts, sketches, and about two thousand songs.
His work influenced Bengali literature, music, and Indian art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of his famous novels, Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World), was turned into a movie by Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray. Interestingly, two of Tagore's songs became national anthems—India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla (My Golden Bengal).
