SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court of India is the highest judicial judicial body of India and the senior-most constitutional court as per the Constitution. The Chief Justice of India (presently Justice NV Ramana) is the head and chief judge of the court and highest-ranking member of the Indian judiciary. The Supreme Court comprises of a maximum of 34 judges. The Supreme Court of India came into existence in 1950, with the first sitting being held on January 28 that year.

The SC has extensive powers in the form of original, appellate and advisory jurisdictions and often hears appeals against verdicts delivered by the various high courts and other courts and tribunals. The law as declared by the SC is binding on all courts within the country as well as the Union and state governments. The Constitution also seeks to ensure the independence of the Supreme Court through various measures.
