Tata Group, founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868, is an Indian multinational company. Tata Sons is the holding company of the Tata Group, headquartered in Mumbai. It has operations running in more than 100 countries across six continents.
After Jamsetji Tata, his son Dorab Tata took over as chairman of the group in 1904. Under Dorab Tata's leadership, the Group forayed into new ventures like steel, electricity, education, aviation and consumer goods. After Dorab Tata's death in 1932, Nowroji Saklatwala held chair and around six years later Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata (JRD Tata) became the chairman.
JRD's tenure as chairman saw the Group entering into other blooming industries like the chemicals, technology, marketing, engineering, cosmetics, manufacturing, tea and software services. It was during this time that Tata Group received international attention.
In 1945, the Tata group established Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO) for the manufacturing of engineering and locomotive products. In 2003, this same company was renamed as Tata Motors. Ratan Tata, JRD Tata‘s nephew, took over as chairman in 1991. Under Ratan Tata‘s leadership, the Group grew by leaps and bounds. He globalised Tata’s business like never before. In 2000, Tata acquired London-based Tetley Tea. Tata Group along with American International Group Inc. (AIG) created the Tata-AIG. In 2004, Tata purchased South Korea’s Daewoo Motors - a truck manufacturing operation.
Under Ratan Tata's leadership, Tata Steel acquired the great Anglo-Dutch steel manufacturer Corus Group. This was the greatest corporate takeover ever done by any Indian company. In 2008, Tata Motors was in headlines for months because of its official launching of Tata Nano. It was popularly known as the People’s Car’.
Tata Group took over the iconic Jaguar Land-Rover brands during the 2008 global financial meltdown when Ford was on the verge of bankruptcy. Within a few years, JLR made a dramatic turnaround.
