Canada’s Liberal Party has won the national election held on Monday, giving a full-term mandate to Prime Minister Mark Carney. The victory marks a stunning political comeback for the Liberals, who were once considered likely to lose to the opposition Conservatives. This election was described as one of the most important at this time due to rising tensions of economic instability and growing trade issues with the United States.
Carney, an economist and former central banker, took over as prime minister in March after Justin Trudeau stepped down.
Who is Mark Carney?
Before entering politics, Mark Carney (60) held some of the most influential economic positions globally. He was Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, where he helped the country navigate the global financial crisis. After that, he became Governor of the Bank of England and served as Chair of the Financial Stability Board from 2011 to 2018.

Trump’s Influence on the Election
The election was significantly influenced by US President Donald Trump, whose repeated threats against Canada became a major point of discussion. Trump not only imposed tariffs on Canadian goods but also went as far as suggesting that Canada should become the "51st state" of the United States. On the day of the vote, he again posted online that annexing Canada would bring economic and military benefits.

Carney campaigned as the "anti-Trump" candidate, promising to defend Canada’s independence and economic interests. His tough stance against Trump’s provocations seems to have resonated with Canadians, as several were worried about his growing "hostility."
After the polls closed, the Liberals were projected to win more of Parliament's 343 seats than the Conservatives. However, it was not immediately clear whether they had secured an outright majority, at least 172 seats, or would need support from smaller parties to form a government and pass legislation, AP reported.
