Who is Wing Commander Vyomika Singh?
The Indian Air Force officer spoke alongside her army counterpart and presented an official detail of India's cross-border operation. Wing Commander Vyomika Singh is among the few women officers to represent the Indian Armed Forces in a joint media interaction.
Her journey in the Air Force began when she was a child, and ever since her school days, she wanted to fly. In fact, her name, which means 'daughter of the s' also became her inspiration.
She enrolled in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) while pursuing her engineering degree. A true trailblazer, she became the first in her family to join the armed forces and was commissioned as a helicopter pilot in the Indian Air Force. On December 18, 2019, she was granted a permanent commission in the flying branch.
She has logged more than 2,500 flying hours and has operated on helicopters like the Chetak and the Cheetah in the toughest of the terrains, which include Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast. She has also been a part of the tri-services all-women mountaineering expedition to Mt. Manirang in 2021, which stands at 21,650 feet. Wing Commander Vyomika's efforts have been recognised by senior defence officials, including the Chief of Air Staff.
In the press briefing, she, along with Col. Sophia Qureshi, gave a detailed account of India's 25-minute-long strike on 9 camps across Pakistan and PoK. She said, "Pakistan has systematically built terror structures and encouraged training areas for terrorism." She noted these "well-known" camps were located in Pakistan and PoK and were 21 in total, starting from Sawai Nalan to Bahawalpur.
