Who Was Mossad's 'Senior Spy' Mohsen Langarneshin Executed By Iran?

Iran on Wednesday executed Mohsen Langarneshin, a man it described as a "senior spy" for Israel's Mossad, over his alleged role in the 2022 assassination of Revolutionary Guard Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei. According to the official IRNA news agency, Langarneshin was hanged after being convicted of providing "technical support" in the targeted killing of Khodaei, who was shot five times by motorbike-borne gunmen outside his home in Tehran.

Iranian authorities claimed that Langarneshin had been recruited by the Mossad in 2020 and held meetings with Israeli intelligence officers in Georgia and Nepal. He allegedly rented safe houses for Israeli operatives across multiple cities, including Isfahan. One of these locations was linked to a drone attack in January 2023 on what Iran called a military workshop—an operation Tehran blamed on Israel.

Langarneshin "confessed in Iran's Revolutionary Court," IRNA reported. The court, set up after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, is widely known for imposing severe sentences on those deemed enemies of the regime. Proceedings in this court typically involve court-appointed lawyers and remain closed to the media.

At the time of his death, Khodaei was referred to in Iranian media as a "defender of the shrine", a term used for members of the IRGC’s Quds Force who operate in Syria and Iraq against the Islamic State group.
