Launched in 2010 by Deepinder Goyal, online food delivery and restaurant booking platform Zomato connects customers, restaurant partners and delivery partners, serving their multiple needs. Customers use the platform to search and discover restaurants, read and write customer generated reviews and view and upload photos, order food delivery, book a table and make payments while dining-out at restaurants.
On the other hand, the platform provides restaurant partners with industry-specific marketing tools which enable them to engage and acquire customers to grow their business while also providing a reliable and efficient last-mile delivery service.
Headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, the company took its business international and served in 10,000 cities across 36 countries having 1.2 million popular restaurants with 80 million foodies every month. However, as part of its “clean up drive”, the Goyal-led platform pulled the plug on most of its global business.
It still continues to operate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but as a dining-out business and not food delivery one. In November 2021, Zomato identified three geographical segments as reportable segments which were – India, UAE and Rest of the world (such as Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, USA, Lebanon, Turkey, Czech, Slovakia, Poland, Qatar, Ireland).
In terms of revenue, Zomato has India as its biggest market, followed by the UAE.
Along with its focus on the food delivery business, Zomato also tapped into the quick commerce market by acquiring quick commerce company Blinkit for Rs 4,447 crore in an all-stock deal in June 2022.
