Google has laid off 200 employees from its global business team as it restructures operations and shifts focus towards AI development.

Google has reportedly laid off around 200 employees from its global business organisation, which handles sales and partnerships worldwide. The job cuts, reported by The Information, come as the tech giant shifts its focus towards artificial intelligence (AI) and data centre development. The company said the move is aimed at streamlining operations to serve customers more effectively.

Strategic Restructuring Continues

In a statement to Reuters, Google said it made a small number of changes across teams “to drive greater collaboration and expand our ability to quickly and effectively serve our customers.” The affected employees, some of whom are being asked to apply for internal roles, are part of Google’s larger effort to restructure amid growing competition in the AI space.
This round of layoffs follows a previous one last month, where Google cut several hundred jobs in its platforms and devices division. That unit includes key products like the Android operating system, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser.

AI Investments Take Centre Stage

Big Tech companies, including Google, are increasingly redirecting funds towards AI and data centre infrastructure, reducing investment in other areas. This broader shift has led to job cuts across the tech sector. In January 2023, Google’s parent company Alphabet announced plans to eliminate 12,000 roles, around 6 per cent of its global workforce. As of December 31, 2024, Alphabet employed approximately 183,323 people.

Industry-Wide Job Cuts

Google is not alone. Other tech giants have also scaled back staff. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, laid off about 5 per cent of its lowest-performing employees earlier this year while accelerating AI hiring. Microsoft cut 650 jobs from its Xbox unit in September last year, and Amazon has trimmed staff across various departments. Even Apple, known for minimal layoffs, reportedly let go of around 100 employees from its digital services team last year.
