Are ATMs Closed in India? PIB Fact Checks (canva)

Amid growing concern sparked by a widely shared WhatsApp message, claiming that ATMs would stay shut for 2-3 days, the government has stepped in to set the record straight: ATMs are not shutting down. In fact, they’re operating as usual.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Thursday debunked a viral WhatsApp message that falsely claimed ATMs across the country would remain closed for 2–3 days. The message, which spread rapidly on the popular messaging platform, caused anxiety among some users over access to cash, but officials have confirmed there is no truth to it.
In a firm response to the misinformation, PIB’s official fact-checking handle tweeted, “A viral #WhatsApp message claims ATMs will be closed for 2–3 days. This Message is FAKE. ATMs will continue to operate as usual. Don’t share unverified messages.”
The PIB Fact Check team is part of a government initiative aimed at combating the spread of fake news. This clarification is the latest in a series of fact-checks issued to reassure the public and prevent panic over false claims shared on social media.
Officials reiterated that ATM services remain fully functional and there is no scheduled downtime or closure.
"ATMs will continue to operate as usual," the statement emphasised, urging people to avoid forwarding or believing such unverified claims.
Fake forwards on WhatsApp have long been a challenge — not just for users, but for authorities attempting to counter disinformation. From health scares to financial rumours, misleading content often gains traction before being debunked, sometimes leaving confusion and concern in its wake.
The PIB reminded users once again to stay alert and rely on trusted sources for accurate updates. “PIB has repeatedly advised the public to be cautious of unverified information circulating on social media platforms,” it said in its statement.
